Re: rental history reporting

The old landlord can tell the new landlord the truth about payment history and other matters. The matters would be the business concerns of the new landlord. However, the 1st amendment of the Constitution permits the old landlord to tell whatever he/she wants to about you. And your remedy is to sue in court under the various causes of action for untruthful statements and invasion of privacy.

Re: rental history reporting

Your old landlord can legally tell your new landlord just about anything as long as it is true. But, you can just not give the name of your old landlord out. You, for example, could give the name and phone number of your old roommate and say you rented from him. I probably do not need to elaborate further on this point. Note that the thing you should be worried about is not your old landlord. The unlawful detainer registry can do you much more damage if you were previously evicted. If you have an unlawful detainer judgment against you, I can probably help you to remove it.
