Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
Rental Laws
My landlord is trying to make me pay $1500 for repairs on my house from water leaking in the wall due to a faulty airconditioner and a bathroom floor that was damaged due to a toilet leaking from the base (not overflowing). I am disputing the fact that I need to pay the bill. She has now raised my rent $140 a month. She just raised my rent $50 a month in November. Can she raise my rent this soon and can she raise it to make me pay for a disputed bill?

Re: Rental Laws
If you have a month-to-month tenancy, your landlord can raise your rent with a 30-day notice, even repeatedly, unless your city has a rent-control ordinance. In this case, you may have an argument that the rental increase represents retaliation for your complaining about the water leaks. Did you complain to the landlord or a public agency?
