Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I rented my home to a family for $3500 per month, they failed to pay Feb rent or 200 late fee. ON Feb 8th their told me they would be moving out on March 1st, they moved out and didn't have their walk-thru. They didn't pay Mar rent or April. their lease was thru Apr 30th. I relisted the home for $3700 and didn't release until May 7th. They claim because that I relisted the home for $200 morethan they were paying that they are not responsible for any rent past Mar 1st. They had a total deposit of $6400. they claim that I had to notify them by march 22nd that they would receive no deposit. I sent certified letter at end of lease in april.

The law regarding refunds of security deposits and move out inspections are set forth in Civil Code section 1950.5. The timing of sending an itemization for deductions or a refund of the deposit is keyed upon move-out, not the end of the original lease.
