Renter
I am a renter and the owner recently passed. we are told we have to move since they are selling the house. Are they supposed to pay for moving expenses? thank you.

If they want to avoid attorney's fees on their part, it would be worth their while to make you a decent offer. There's no requirement that they pay you anything, though, other than give you a 30- or 60-day written eviction notice, depending on how long you've lived there. Then, if you don't move within that time, they'd have to file an unlawful detainer (eviction) lawsuit to obtain a judgment for possession. So, it could drag out for quite a while, unless they give you an incentive to move sooner.
Re: Renter
Are you month-to-month, or do you have a lease? Death of the landlord doesn't terminate the lease. Neither does the death of the tenant, for that matter. If it's month to month, however, Mr. Cohen is right.
