Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Residential Occupancy Law

Very simply, Is it legal to have more than one family in a single family residential Home? The two family's are not related in any way.

Thanks,

Re: Residential Occupancy Law

This will depend on local laws--I don't believe California state law prohibits this. Most likely, any county or city ordinance will limit the number of persons in one house. Start by calling the city and asking if there's such a limit.

Re: Residential Occupancy Law

There's no state law, so it will depend on local ordinance. (Also on the lease, if you happen to be leasing). In one California city for which I researched this issue, the number of allowed occupants was essentially 2 per bedroom plus 1. So, for a 3 bedroom house, it would be 7 allowed.
