Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

response to three day notice to pay or quit

I have currently received a three day notice. I was unable to pay rent in full over last couple of months because I have been ill I was put in the hospital in march. I have been unable to collect my disability check because of a delay in my paper work being turned in. I have informed the management of my problem but they were unable to get the owner to wait the ten days I need to pay my rent. what I need to know is there any way that I can delay this process. Or if I can file something when or if I am served an unlawful detainer notice. I am currently unable to make arrangements to vacate the apt. right away. I would like to keep the apt. if possible.
