Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

my roommates brother lives at his house. doesn't pay rent, doesn't have a job, no cell no money. anyways last week while i was at work, he went into my room, door closed, took my computer out of my room and left me a note that said "i needed to borrow your labtop for a couple house. ill bring you some money for it. roger" he had it for 2 days and on friday he brought it back, left it out in the garage and after finding it, i came in turned it on and didn't work. i had a computer repair shop take a look at it and it had spilt liquid in it and so the processor fried. and is completely ruined. it's about 3-4 years old but was running perfect. what legal recourse do i have?

Taking a penniless person to small claims court may result in a judgment you can't collect. A police report might result in an arrest, but I'd say a small chance a court would order him to make restitution.
