Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Security Deposit Issue

Ive recently moved out of an old rental place, and now am being told that my previous landlord is going to take $300 out of my $500 deposit. She says that $45 is for the cleaning lady she brought in, $125 is for the carpet cleaning, and another $125 is for not having cleaned the carpet before I moved out. Is it legal for her to charge me an arbitrary amount of money for not cleaning the carpet despite the fact that she never told me it was my responsibility, nor was it in the contract, especial considering the good condition of the carpet? If it is legal for her to charge me for the carpet cleaning cost, who decides which carpet cleaning company is chosen, considering that she could go out and get the most expensive one out there, just to spite me? Thank you for your help.

Re: Security Deposit Issue

It is no proper for your LL to take money for cleaning which results from normal wear and tear. You are not required to pay to have the carpet cleaned. In fact, you should not be charged for any carpet cleaning. Good luck.
