Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I am currently a tentant in a one bedroom house. My father, the primary money maker just passed away 3 weeks ago and the landlord is threatening to throw me, my husband and my 2 year old son out of the place if we don't pay what is owed on the rent in three days. I understand the eviction process and everything but I'm confused on this. With my fathers sudden passing, this wasn't something we knew was coming he just didn't wake up one morning and he was only 56, would we be entitled to any extensions or exceptions? We've tried giving the landlord 150 dollars toward the rent but he gave it back to us after having it in his hands and told us not to worry about paying him at the moment because he knew he'd get what was owed to him when we got the life insurance. We've also offered to pay him numerous times as much as we could at the time with my husbands unemployment but he refuses. Until now and all of a sudden without warning there's a for rent sign outside my house and he's telling us he's going to give us a three day pay or quit and needs to show the property to prospective buyers. What can we do?

I'd be happy to help. If you receive a summons, you'll only have a few days to respond, so don't ignore it. I can stall any eviction for at least a couple of months.
