theft by a repairman

My landlord posted a notice that someone was going to come in my apartment and clean my chimney the following day. The next day she let the chimney cleaners in my apartment and left them there alone unsupervised. Now my diamond ring worth $22,000. is gone. Who is responsible for the loss?

Re: theft by a repairman

Hard to say. Who took the ring? Assuming you can establish

that the repairman took the ring, the repairman is primarily liable. The

company may also be liable. The landlord may be liable if it had reason to

know if any problems with the honesty of the company. You could try to contend

that the landlord is liable for failure to supervise, but I can't predict whether

this is a winning argument.
