Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I have a tree on my property that overhangs a fence and is touching the neighbor's roof in a couple of places. They want the branches removed - do I have to pay for this? Should we split the cost? I'm trying to find out what is the fair thing to offer them.

If push comes to shove, you have no responsibility for the branches that overhang their property, but they have the right to cut the tree back to the property line, which would certainly not look very good and would not be great for the tree. So an offer to split the cost of a good professional overall trimming of the tree would be a very reasonable compromise.
