We don't have a crystal ball and you provide no information about amounts. So how are we supposed to tell you what you owe?

Collection agencies will throw different numbers at you to try to get you to settle without a lawsuit. Maybe the doubling is because a settlement offer is supposedly expiring. Maybe there is some collection expense, like retaining a law firm to sue you, that they are allowed to add. Maybe they have just figured out how much additional you owe because of some supposed damage you did, or the like. You can always go back to the HOA and ask it for a current figure, with supporting detail. It's a good idea to be suspicious of numbers thrown at you by a collection agency.
