Your mom is your legal guardian and is in charge of your financial affairs. I think she should give you an explanation, for your information and perhaps future knowledge when you get to be an adult at age 18. However, a minor's parents or guardians have the right and power to be in charge of the minor's finances. This does not mean the parents can take money the minor got as a gift or inherited and spend it as though it was their own. That would be improper, but usually they can invest and manage it for the child's benefit. The parents can use and control their childrens' earnings for household and family purposes.

The letter from the Social Security Administration probably was about money. However, the letter probably didn't have any money in it!

You might want to make a mental note to yourself to ask for information about your finances when you're 18, and perhaps entitled to take charge of your accounts and property that were in custody for you as a minor.
