Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in California

I have an ex-boyfriend who seems to be having a hard time letting go. Though I have repeatedly asked him not to contact me in any way, he calls, text and emails nonstop. Ive had to change my cell twice to try and avoid him but his mother and I work for the same company and he keeps getting my contact info. Hes made threatening remarks about finding my new boyfriend, calls members of my family asking about me. I have moved out of state but the harassment will not stop. This has been going on for almost 6 months now. Is there anything I can do? I figured a restraining order would be useless since we're hundreds of miles apart. But is there anything else the law can do? The level of intensity and derangement in his correspondence (which I ignore) has begun to frighten my family, friends and myself.

The judge can order in the restraining order that he not call, text, or email you, in addition to staying a certain distance away from you you. The judge can order other things as well.

If it's to the extreme you are saying, I would recommend you go ahead and move forward with a TRO and then hire an attorney to appear on your behalf in court to make the TRO final. I have been to court several times to obtain these final restraining orders.

I would see if there were a way to obtain a restraining order from a court in the area where your ex-boyfriend lives. A court in your area would have jurisdiction to issue an order, but you would need to have it enforced in your ex-boyfriend's home state. It makes sense to me have everything done there.

If the situation continues after the restraining order, California does give you a private cause of action for stalking.
