Legal Question in Social Security Law in California
My mother (89 yrs. old) has been getting $1015.00/month Social Security. I think that is hers & her deceased husband who died in 2005. This month's check was only $640.00. I phoned the SS office & had my mother speak to them & they wouldn't answer any questions - they just told her to come in the office with proof of citizenship. Did they cut everyone's SS?

SSA reduces the amount of benefits when there is an overpayment case or a change in the type of benefits she receives. The amount of benefits that a person can get depends on the type of benefits he gets. If it is a Social Security Disability benefits/ RSDI, again, the amount depends on their earning records. While for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), it is determined by SSA. You should be receiving a letter that explains why the amount of benefits your mother is receiving was reduced. It is better if your mother visits the SSA office so SSA can fully explain the reason of the reduction, most probably there was an overpayment of benefits.
