Legal Question in Social Security Law in California
SS care taker income?
My friend Is a full time, live in, care taker for his invalid grandmother (both living in Los Angeles county CA). He is 22 and not a dependent. His grandmother is recieving SS disablility and retirement benefitts, most of which I understand is going to pay off credit card debts. He is only recieving $180 a month as a care taker (or whatever it's technically called). I was thinking that this is a ridiculously small amount of money he's geting, considering he had to quit his $10 an hour, full time job, and can't leave the house, to be able to provide her with 24 hour assistance. She can't feed, or clothe herself, nor can she use the restroom alone.
He's been recieving the same small amount for years. Is this right? is someone ripping him off, and if so, what can be done? (please respond at [email protected], or reply here to my aol account)

Re: SS care taker income?
These amounts are usually determined by Stae Medicaid rules and regulations. If your friend is not receiving the maximum benefit, he can inquire at his local welfare office ( in Texas, it the Dept. of Public Services) and make application for the maximum benefit. If he does not receive what the regulations allow, he can make an appeal through the departmental system. These types of transfer payments usually follow a fairly rigid formula which leave little opportunity for argument, but if a significant factor is not allowed proper weight, the benefit would be greatly affected.
