Legal Question in Social Security Law in California
What is a typical day like for a Social Security disability attorney? I have always wanted to help the disabled and am trying to decide whether to go to law school and go into disability law, or become a social worker.

When I was in my senior year in college, I thought about a PHD program in counseling psychology working with people who are trying to get back into the work force after an illness or injury. I decided to go to law school instead, and it was almost 20 years later before I focused on working with disabled folks who are trying to get some medical and financial benefits to sustain some level of dignity and security.
I really enjoy what I do, but I am very glad that I am doing it as a lawyer, rather than as a psychologist (or social worker).
Law school is the best liberal arts education you can get. It is where you learn how things really work - the limitations on government power, the relationship between the federal and state governments, the rules governing commercial transactions in the private sector, marital property rights, and on and on. With a law degree, you can write your future from a wide range of options, and follow your gut (as I did) to find an area that is a good fit with who you are.
Law school is not for everyone, but if think it might be for you, i would urge you to give it a try.
