Legal Question in Tax Law in California

Calif. FTB effect on property in South Carolina

The Calif. Franchise tax board recorded a lien in 2003 against us for 1996, 1997 and 1998 taxes. We are trying to buy a house and lenders tell us this has to be paid first. My question is does a Calif. tax lien have any effect in South Carolina? In other words, can it attach to property here? I had always thought it only attached to Calif. property.

It attaches to you, and appears on your credit report. It is just like a judgment against you in California follows you. Lenders do not like to make loans when there is a possibility that you may not be able to pay due to garnishment or a levy against your income.
