Legal Question in Tax Law in California
My friend has been divorced from her husband for 2 yrs. She just received a letter from the IRS asking her to pay 22,000 of backtaxes that belong to her ex-husband. She explained they are no longer married but it appears they expect her to pay in addition to him paying.
Is this legal or correct?

yes, married persons filing joint tax returns are jointly and severally liable for the taxes. however, in some cases the innocent spouse rules may apply.
