Legal Question in Tax Law in California

IRS I.D. or Franchise Tax Board Number

We are a non-profit civic organization applying for a temporary liquor license for an event. The form we need to complete for yhe ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) asks for an ''IRS and/or Franchise Tax Board document showing our tax exempt status with the tax I.D. number''. I told them I had a document showing we are a 501(c)3 (non-profit status) but they said they didn't know what that was. We never file income tax because we make so little. How do I get one of these numbers (documents) and which one is the easiest to get with as little government intervention in our association as possible?

Re: IRS I.D. or Franchise Tax Board Number

You can't just file Articles of Incorporation an expect to be recognized as a nonprofit corporation. You must apply for recgonition as a nonprofit organization with both the IRS (using Form 1023) and the California Franchise Tax Board (using Form FTB-3500).

If you applied and your applications were approved, you should have received letters form the IRS and FTB confirming your nonprofit status. If you have those letters, then that is the informatino the ABC needs to review. If you did not apply for recognition as a nonprofit corporation, you need to do so.
