Legal Question in Tax Law in California

Irs & s.S.

My husband of 12 years was killed in a fatal car accident Nov.'06.He served in the US Army, and as a dedicated hourly employee, worked for his father in the family business as a tack painter for 32 years.

When I submitted all required information to S.S. office requesting any financial buriel assistance available, I was told there was not enough in my husbands account to even assist with the standard $250.00. I have filed my own taxes since I married my husband, as married filing seperatly. This was due to the information that my father inlaw gave me which was that he took care of handling my husbands deductions from paychecks and that he always did the families taxes so I was not to worry. He also assured us that my husband was covered by a life insurance policy, which supposedly had been an additional deduction included from husband weekly pay. I have not had access to any douments thus far and he is insistant on not letting me have access to any documents he might have regarding my husbands life or death!! Seems my fath inlaw didn't plan on outliving his 2 boys ..he was just going to let them continue believing that they would have at least a decient retirement with their hard earned S.S. fund.!!! How could this be ?? Persue?
