Legal Question in Tax Law in California

Taxes for independent minors

Hi! I am 16 and I live on my own supporting myself with my own income. I am curious to know about any laws reguarding the taxation of minors. I currently make about $800. a month however I just got a new job last month and I believe they are taking out taxes even though I claimed exempt on the W-4 form and I am also making less money than my previous job with the same amount of hours. I am also a full time high school student with plans to graduate in Dec. and I have been accepted to Hawaii Pacific University and I believe I qualify for financial aid however I have no tax return information from last year because I did not file. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Taxes for independent minors

You get a Standard Deduction for single: 4,250

You get a Exemption of $2,700

That's all income tax free! Above that, you must pay income tax. (YOu still must pay Soc. Security tax, FICA, on everything!! Sorry!!)
