in California does your car insurance proof of insurance have to be a paper copy or can it be digital on your I phone

I would think either would be legally acceptable -- the police usually have your insurance info available on their computers in their cruisers -- but to be safe I would print out a copy and keep it in the glove compartment. If I were you I would avoid giving police officers your smartphone.
