what are the laws pertaining to sleeping in my car?

You will get hassled and rousted. In my opinion you have every right to sleep in your car if it is legally parked on public property (or private property with permission), especially if you can't afford any other place to stay. But the cops will find some reason to hassle you. More so in rich neighborhoods than in poor ones or in the middle of nowhere. I would also advise against drinking or possession of contraband.
