Legal Question in Traffic Law in California
Hi,
Me and my friend are from Europe and want to make a motorbike-tour in western- USA.
Most time we'll travel in Californien.
We both are going to make our driving-licence in january.
In our country (Austria) you have to throttle your bike down for two years if you make the
licence-exam before your 21th birthday.
Furthermore, you are two years on probation after you got your driving licencce.
During this probation tresspasses will be dealt with much more severe.
Are there such laws as in Austria, because we dont want to travel with throttled-down bikes,
or are there no such laws as to be on probation, or have to throttle down your bike?
my best regards
Andi

Congratulations! California is a wonderful place to be biking, although at times -- because of the mountains -- some areas can get pretty cold. I know of no law that requires that bikes must be throttled down if you're younger than 21 years and possess a license. If you have a learner's permit, there are restrictions that are contained in Vehicle Code section 12509 subsection (e) which do not permit you to operate a motorcycle during darkness, on freeways, and not carry passengers. However, it sounds like you will have a license. You might have to take a special examination to obtain an M1 or M2 license to operate a motorcycle. See Vehicle Code section 12804.9.
You might send an e-mail to the Automobile Club of Southern California, for instance. I'm sure they'll be helpful to you in providing you with all the rules, test requirements, and maybe even maps.
