Knowingly smuggling a significant amount of Marijuana

What will happen to a california resident who is charged with knowingly smuggling (via vehicle) a significant amount of marijuana in California? And if it is across the border? Where can I find even more information about this situation.

Probably a pot smuggler is better off getting popped at the border than within California, though there's no way to know for sure.
