Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

I am not aware if an amber strobe dome light is illegal, but it does not sound like a good idea. If you were to turn it on while driving you're just asking to get pulled over. The police could probably ticket you for distracted driving or something similar. Why have it at all if you're going to cover it up? If you are intending to cover it up when the cops are approaching your car it is not going to help. If you already got pulled over hopefully it was only a fixit ticket.
