Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

Lienholder/Illegal Sale

I am the lienholder of a vehicle me and my husband bought for our son to drive. He apparently went missing and sold the vehicle for whatever reason. We know this because yesterday we received a Certified Letter via mail from the new buyer requesting to meet with us to sign over the vehicle!!! Of course we want the vehicle back but the other party refuses. The vehicle was never reported stolen as we don't want to get our son in trouble with the law, but how do we go about getting it back? And what charges would be brought up against our son, if any?
