Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

Hi, I live in CA and I got pulled over for expired registration and was given a driving with a suspended license ticket. I had no idea that my license was suspended. They impounded my car and now I have a court date next month.

So, turns out I had an old ticket that I supposedly didn't pay. From what I can remember I did send out a check to pay for this ticket. Obviously, they didn't receive it and I've moved a few times since then. I paid that outstanding ticket and was able to go to DMV to reinstate my license.

My question is, I can't afford a lawyer and I was wondering what I could expect when I go to court next month. I've reinstated my license, I have insurance, and I renewed my registration. Would that be enough to dismiss my case or at least reduce the fines and lower the offense? I can't afford to go to jail and have my license get re-suspended. I have an elderly mother who relies on me for transportation. Would it be in my best interest to speak to the prosecutor for my case and work out a lesser sentence prior to my court hearing? Or am I doomed for huge fines and jail time?

Please advise. This is my first and only serious offense and I'm scared of the outcome. Thank you!

If you were able to reinstate your license and paid old tickets, the court may impose a fine for failure to appear but jail is unlikely. Traffic offenses ofter don't have prosecutors to discuss case. Sometimes city attorney may appear depending on jurisdiction and provides an avenue to discuss disposition.
