Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

Lying to an officer

I was pulled over for speeding. I lied at first to the officer but changed my mind and told them who i was. He still put lied to an officer to avoid prosecution on the ticket. I just received in the mail a court date separate from the speeding ticket to attend to it was the criminal division staiting misedemeanor division m of the superior court. What does this mean? Will I go to jail or what is the fine I will receive. I came forward myself when he was going to let me go and I told the truth. Am i able to prove that? Should i get a lawyer. This is my first time offense and have no other records. please let me know as soon as possible.

Re: Lying to an officer

In one sense, it doesn't matter whether you lie or tell the truth to a police officer. Either is a variant of talking to the police, something that can only hurt you. ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN COURT. So keep your mouth shut from now on!! And hire a lawyer for the misdemeanor charge.
