Legal Question in Traffic Law in California

Speeding ticket due to broken speedometer

I was driving up to the SF Bay area from LA and midway my speedometer quit working. Shortly after, I recieved my first speeding ticket. Upon arrival in the bay area, I immediately setup an appointment to have the problem fixed, however, 2 days later, I recieved a 2nd speeding ticket. The car was eventually fixed and now I'm wondering.. one ticket is under appeal and I need to appear in court for the trial de novo. The 2nd in northern california arrived late in the mail and i missed the trial de novo deadline. Would anyone have any experience arguing these types of tickets? I was apparently speeding but there was absolutely no way for me to know since the speedometer wasn't working. One ticket is in Ventura county (court date Jan 30) and the other is in Palo Alto, CA.

Thank you for any advice!

Re: Speeding ticket due to broken speedometer

You could contact the court clerk and find out how much the fine would be and send a check to the court for that amount. If the court was only a short time ago you may be able to just pay the original fine, or attend traffic school.

The second possibility is to hire an attorney to set the matter on calendar and appear for you. This option would be the most expensive approach. Depending upon your circumstances this approach may not be worth the cost.
