i got a ticket for a suspended license unaware of suspension. can i fight it?

Yes.
One of the elements of driving on a suspended license is that you know about the suspension. The DA has to prove you knew of the suspension. Your attorney should verify that the DMV packet notes proper notice - was it verbal, written or just mailed?
There can be defenses. In the mean time, if there's any way possible to get your license back before you go to court, it will give your lawyer something to work with.
