Legal Question in Traffic Law in California
Unpaif Traffic Ticket
In 1998, my friend got into--name removed--minor traffic accident. Both parties were cited for violation for not carrying auto ins. My friend received--name removed--ticket (bill) was for around $1,700. He did not have the money at that time so he didn't pay. The ticket went into court appointed collection agency later on. And finally, when his time to renew his license, his license was suspended due to unpaid ticket so he couldn't renew. He just couldn't take care of it back then so he just let it go without doing anything for all these years. Although, he really still struggling with his finace, he would like to get his license back but he really doesn't know how to fix it or where to start. What would be his option? Does he need an attorney? He's really not very good at public speaking(shy). I'm afraid if he appears infront of the judge, he cannot explain the situation well ( I know he's--name removed--grown man but it's just his personality). Thank you for your assistance on this issue.

Re: Unpaif Traffic Ticket
He has two choices: First he can arrange to pay the ticket with the collection agency: Second he can go to court and request that the matter be placed on clanedar. Then go to court and ask the judge to reduce the fine because of his financial status. If he can truthfully state that he has not been driving in a suspended license the judge may give him a break. He can also ask to do community work in lieu of paying the fine. Or the court can put him on a payment plan. You could go with him and ask the court to allow you to explain what he wants. The court may not allow you to speak. A well written letter stating the facts and circumstances can be submitted to the court and should be sufficient.
