Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

401k disbursement

My father in-law passed away going on 4 years ago. My wife was named as a benneficiary for his 401k along with a friend. His ex-wife has filed saying she is entitled to 1/2 of the value. It is my understanding that she is entitled to 1/2 of what was paid in during the time they were married. She has gone through 11 attorneys tieing this up and the company will not or can not disburse any funds till this is settled. I have contacted a few attornies on this but they require a retainer or wnt 30-40 percent of the settled amount that we cannot afford to pay. The total value is about $75,000. What if anything can I do without legal representation to get this process done? We live in Iowa and he lived in California. Any input would be appreciated.
