how is attoneys pay calculated

My mothers property was appraised

at 640,000. and the attorney is asking for 17,000 I dont understand how this about came to be. thanks Donna

Maybe there are additional assets, or there's a request for "extraordinary fees" for things not covered by the statutory fee. The statutory fee (maximum), is figured at 4% of the first $100,000, 3% of the next $100,000, and 2% of the next $800,000.
