Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My brother past away more then three months ago. Since that time we have received no explanation as to his passing from the coroners office. They have repeatedly put us off and made excuses as to why they cannot give us an answer. My mother cannot collect on the life insurance or the 401K which she needs to keep his house. Can the coroner's office be sued?

This doesn't make sense. Even if the cause of death has not yet been determined, an death certificate will still be issued within a couple/three weeks of the death, and that will enable the decedent's heirs/beneficiaries to claim life insurance proceeds etc.

No, you can't sue the coroner's office for delays. If he is deceased, a claim needs to be initiated. The coroner's office can at least verify that he is deceased, even if a cause of death is under investigation.
