Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

In California, is the surviving spouse responsible for paying credit card debt held solely by the deceased spouse? What assets are considered part of the deceased's estate and subject to valuation if a Family Trust exists? What assets or death benefit proceeds are excluded from the deceased's estate, when determining the value of the estate? Can you recommend a book or resource reference that may help the surviving spouse understand their responsibilities with regard to the decedent's individual debts (credit cards or other)? Thank you.
