Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

changing property ownership to someone in a will

My brother just died in New Mexico. He left a will giving my mother all his assets which amount to just one piece of land that is probably worth $25,000 to $30,000 at best.

How does my mother get the deed to the property changed to her name?

Re: property left in will

Check with a probate attorney in the state where the property is. If it's California, there are simplified procedures with no probate required for land worth less than $100,000. If it's in New Mexico, perhaps they have the same.

In any case, a local attorney can tell you, and the cost for the procedure should be small, given the value of the land.
