Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Getting A Copy of A Will

In 1998 my Grandfather on my Mothers side passed away. I can recall my Mother telling me on numerous occasions that my Grandfather left money for me in his will. Since then I have moved out and I am now 19 years old, I could really use the money. I would like to know the steps I have to take to have a copy of the will and see in fact if he did leave me money. Would you please inform me of the whole process of receiving a copy?

Thank-you for your time

Re: Getting A Copy of A Will

If the will was probated, you can look up the probate file at the county court where your grandfather lived--this would include the will along with a listing of his assets, debts and beneficiaries.

Even if the will wasn't probated, the law requires that it be filed with the county court clerk within 30 days of one's death, although this is not always done. Still, you can check with the court to see if they have the will on file.
