Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

creditor of decedant's estate

Can a creditor of the decendant collect an unsecured debt from the surviving spouse? Decedant purchased a car, financed through the dealership/manufacturer. Upon his death, car was repossessed. Creditor seeks $11k deficiency from surviving spouse who would easily be classified as ''working poor.'' Can the creditor collect from the spouse? Or is the car the only recourse?
