Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

death of a parent

My father recently passed away and we were estranged. I was told I could claim his body at the coroner's office. As far as I know, he had no will and very little assets if any. Will I be responsible for his debts such as rent, taxes, bills, etc. that he may owe if I claim his body?

No, claiming his body is totally separate from the other matters you bring up. Trying to put together his estate and resolving as much as you can does not convert his debts into yours. Your are claiming the body for the estate and not yourself. See if the coroner's office will keep you address from anyone but thel ocal law enforcement agencies.
