Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Debts of deceased spouse

I'm in California, my spouse passed away after a long battle with cancer. We have substantial medical bills and credit debt in his name only. What is the spouse responsible for. We held real estate jointly. Can they require that we sell our property. There was no will or life insurance and there are children.

thank you
