What does tenant at sufferance of the estate mean?

This is actually a property law question not a trusts, wills and estates question.

Tenancy at sufference essentially means that the person who used to have lawful possession of the property (renter holding an apartment) wrongfully stays in possession after their interest (end of lease) expires.
