Father died

My father rented a storage space and forgot to give me the number for the front gate, i have a key to the lock inside - I just can't get inside. When called the storage company told me i have to get a lawyer to get the number. both my father and mother have died and there is family photos etc. inside which i would like to get - what do i do?

If your father's estate value is less than $100,000, excluding items with beneficiaries (like IRAs, pay-on-death accounts, etc.), you can sign an affidavit under probate code section 13100 and they have to turn the contents over to you (you'll have to pay any storage fees due). The affidavit needs notarization, and the form is contained in the probate code section itself.

If his estate was larger, a probate (and court order) will likely be required.
