Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Financial liability for a dead family member

My girlfriends father recently passed away. There are medical bills and funeral expenses and possibly other debts that may not be able to be paid by the widow of 5 years' marriage. Could they ( my girlfriend and her sister ) be financially responsible in any way for their father's debts? They just discovered that a life insurance policy was left in her and her sister's name. Could this add liability?

Re: Financial liability for a dead family member

Your girlfriend and her sister wouldn't be liable for the debts, and life insurance proceeds are usually protected from the estate's creditors. Her father's wife may have some liability, though, if the debts are considered community debts, and the estate is liable for the debts up to the amount of property in the estate (her father's separate property assets and his half of the community property assets, if any).
