Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Financial responability after fathers passing

My father passed away leaving quite a few credit card debts. He died in California. I live in Texas and was not a dependent on my father. There was no value in my father's estate. In finalizing his affairs am I responsable for paying off his debts? Again there is nothing to sell or accounts to use to pay the debts. What info do I need to provide his creditors? What steps do I need to take to protect my own assets?

Re: Financial responability after fathers passing

Only your fathers estate and assets is responsible for debts. Notify the creditors of his death along with a copy of the death certificate, and let them know there were no assets.

Your father's estate is responsible for his debts. Let the creditors know that your father has died, you may want to send a copy of his death certificate, and that there are no assets in his estate.

You are not liable for any of his debts unless you co-signed for him.
