If you know which court and the case number, you can find out what is going on by going to the courthouse and requesting to see the file. Some counties have this online, and some you have to go in person. If you don't know the case number, but are sure of the county, you will have to check the filing index first.

In most counties in California you can do that online. Go to the Court's website and look under Case Summaries or under Probate.
