Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Finding a will for a recently-deceased?

A close family friend just passed away and his family is unable to locate a will, despite being certain that a will existed. They didn't have a 'family attorney' or anything obvious. Are there any methods of finding a will other than locating one among his personal property?

Thanks in advance.
