Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

Hi;

I am the executor of an estate. All parties have been notified of the death. I am trying to sell off the house which has personal property belonging to a 3rd party still in the house. How long do I have to house or protect this personal property belonging to the 3rd party before I can liquidate it? It has been over 6 months now.

The easiest answer is to ship it to the person to whom it belongs. If they're unreachable, you can treat it as abandoned property. The rules are a bit voluminous, but start here at the California Department of Consumer Affairs website:

Make sure you send written notice to the owner as well. If they changed their address with the Post Office, it should be forwarded to them.
