Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

When my husband died I notified his credit cards that were solely his and they said I wasn't responsible for the bills and now I have a collection agency calling. There wasn't a will, living trust or estate. He didn't have an income for years. The only property, a home is now in my name. I have been the only name on the loan for years. I paid off all the joint debt and his medical bills. I only have my income. What am I resposible for?
